"The cost of the Tet Offensive and the Allied counterattack was high. Many cities in South Vietnam suffered extensive damage. . . . Civilians suffered too. Exact numbers are not clear, but approximately 15,000 civilians are thought to have been killed with another 20,000 wounded as a result of the fighting . . . Approximately 1,100 U.S. soldiers were killed, and nearly 3,000 were wounded. South Vietnamese troops were also hit hard with 2,300 ARVN soldiers reported dead, and a few thousand more wounded. For the communists, the Tet Offensive had mixed results . . . American estimates put the number killed at 40,000 to 50,000, but those estimates are probably high. |
